THE PICNIC
Dianna was a very pretty girl and lived at the edge of a large wood, she lived with her mother and father they were a very happy family. Oh! there was a very new baby too, who always seemed to be saying "Goo goo," to Dianna. One day during the school holidays Dianna decided to go for a picnic near the wood, with her friend Billy, so she asked her mother if that would be alright. "Of course dear," said her mother, who help the young girl to make up a picnic basket to take. Soon she was on her way to call for her friend, they set off with there Picnic basket. - It was a lovely day the sun was high in the sky, the birds were singing their little songs and the hedgerow seemed full of blossoms. Now to get to the wood they had to go along a lane, over a bridge, through a gate and across a ?eld so it was quite a long walk for them. On the way they chatted about the different flowers they saw and what they would be doing during the rest of their holidays, at last they arrived at the wood. Dianna had decided to eat their picnic near a small stream, with small rocks, as they looked into the stream they could see small ?sh and water lilies floating on the top of the water. Bluebells and primroses grew wild along the side of the stream. Yes it was just the place for a picnic. While Billy went to see if he could catch any fish, Dianna opened up the picnic basket, spread a pretty little cloth on the grass, out came sandwiches, lemonade, and apple for each of them and a piece of chocolate cake. Dianna thought it looked very nice, making her feel quite hungry, she called Billy and as he also felt hungry he came quickly and they both tucked into the food. They then decided to rest awhile before doing anything else, it was very restful, and quiet just the trees sighing and the water from the stream trickling.
. Suddenly. "Where are they?" came a little voice At first Dianna thought it might be Billy. "No, it can't be Billy." The tiny voice went on. "oh dear, l must have them" Now both of the children looked at each other still not speaking, they kept very still, with their eyes getting big and round, they both noticed a little red squirrel jumping up and down near the cloth with the remains of the meal on it. The squirrel looked as if it was doing a little dance and then turning and brushing its tail, he stopped when he saw the two children, looked at them both with his bright eyes and his head moving from side to side. The children weren't quite sure what to do, as first they had never heard an animal talk before and second they really were curious about what the squirrel had lost, they hoped he wasn't frighted of them. The little creature must have known the children wanted to help for he said. "Have you children seen any nuts around here." "Nuts!" said Dianna. "What kind of nuts," asked billy trying not to startle the small red squirrel. "Large brown nuts," said the squirrel "l left them here, while I went to see a friend of mine." Dianna said. "Maybe if we moved the cloth, we may find them!" So Billy stood up and after moving all the bits from the top and putting all the crumbs and bits into the basket, as not to leave it untidy, they picked up the cloth and there under the cloth were the little brown nuts. "Thank you." said the little squirrel, quickly scooping up the nuts and off he went, so fast that the children didn't have time to say goodbye. Such a wind suddenly came and started to blow, a large crow called out and Billy sat up rubbing his eyes. Looking around he saw Dianna sleeping, he took hold of her shoulder and woke her up. "Oh" she said, looking around, she saw the tablecloth still on the ground and the picnic basket their too. "l must have been dreaming" she said to no one in particular. "So have l" said Billy telling her about a red squirrel. "Funny l also had the same dream" she said quietly " I wonder, very odd" "We must get back home as it looks like its going to rain." said Billy starting to gather all the empty plates and glasses. "l feel as if we have already done this once." said Dianna. "l know what you mean." commented Billy as they both started to run home.
